Preview: Spain v Portugal

Set to take centre stage in Cape Town on 29 June is a glittering Round of 16 clash between two neighbours and contenders for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ crown: Spain and Portugal. Standing second and third respectively in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, the eagerly anticipated encounter between the Iberian duo at the Green Point Stadium is the sides’ first meeting at world football’s top table.

The match

Spain-Portugal, Round of 16, Cape Town, Tuesday 29 June 2010

Expectations are extremely high ahead of the last-16 meeting between two teams considered among the pre-tournament contenders for the coveted Trophy. And with La Roja and A Selecção das Quinas both having had to come through a gruelling group phase, one of the fancied pair will be heading home much earlier than expected.

European champions Spain arrived at South Africa 2010 as firm favourites for the world title along with Brazil, though Vicente del Bosque’s team were given a harsh wake-up call in an opening 1-0 defeat against Switzerland. Showing their mettle, La Selección gritted their teeth and won their next two Group H games against Honduras and Chile to qualify in top spot in their section and avoid a last-16 meeting with Dunga’s charges.

Portugal, for their part, safely negotiated a fiercely competitive Group G also containing Côte d’Ivoire, Korea DPR and Brazil. Carlos Queiroz’s solid side played out a goalless opening draw with Didier Drogba and Co before cutting loose in a 7-0 success over the North Koreans. Following that goalfest, another scoreless draw in their final game against the five-time world champions was enough to secure second spot and a place in the knockout stages.

Both coaches have near-to-full-strength squads from which to choose, though former Real Madrid boss Del Bosque will be without key midfielder Xabi Alonso and defender Raul Albiol. Opposite number Queiroz, who also once held the reins at Los Merengues, welcomes back midfield schemer Deco though cannot call upon the versatile Ruben Amorim.

Players to watch

David Villa v Cristiano Ronaldo
The Spanish striker’s three-goal haul so far at South Africa 2010 has taken his tally at FIFA World Cups to six in total, making Barcelona’s new signing his country’s highest ever scorer in the competition. The flying Portuguese winger, for his part, has struck just once to date in South Africa despite claiming the Budweiser Man of the Match award in each of his side’s three matches. The Real Madrid forward needed a total of 17 shots to score his solitary goal, which came in the demolition of Korea DPR, though Ronaldo can count himself unfortunate to have been denied by the woodwork on two occasions already.

The stat
33 – The Cape Town clash will be the two teams’ first meeting at a FIFA World Cup, but the pair share a lengthy footballing history featuring no fewer than 32 previous matches. Spain have the edge with 15 wins to just five victories for Portugal, though the latter are unbeaten in the duo’s matches at continental finals: drawing 1-1 at the 1984 UEFA European Championship and winning 1-0 at the 2004 edition of the same competition.

What they said
"Portugal are a great team and they’re about more than just Cristiano Ronaldo. Yes it’s true that Cristiano is one of their best players, but we mustn’t forget that the Portuguese are the only team that still haven’t conceded a goal at this World Cup. That proves that they’re a solid unit and not just a collection of individuals. Their game is based around defensive solidity, pace and counter-attacking, as well as having very skilful players. I foresee a very difficult game, like they all will be for the rest of the competition. Only the best teams are left in it now," Vicente del Bosque, Spain coach.

"We’re ready to take on anybody. We’ve already played in critical games during qualifying and now we have another all-or-nothing match at a World Cup. That’s why we’re ready to give everything we’ve got on the pitch with only one aim in mind: staying in the World Cup. Portugal’s best is still to come," Carlos Queiroz, Portugal coach.

Prediction: Spain to win 3-1

Preview: Paraguay v Japan

History will be made whatever the outcome when Paraguay meet Japan in the Round of 16 – for whoever prevails in Pretoria will advance to the FIFA World Cup™ quarter-finals for the first time. Having gone beyond the group stage on three of their past seven finals appearances, Gerardo Martino's Paraguay will be determined to build on their success in finishing top of Group F against a Japan side through to the knockout phase for the first time on foreign soil.

The match
Paraguay-Japan, Tshwane/Pretoria (Loftus Versfeld Stadium)

Previously famed for their tenacious rearguard, Paraguay are not just about defence, their 4-3-3 formation including the vastly-experienced Roque Santa Cruz in attack alongside Borussia Dortmund duo Lucas Barrios and Nelson Valdez. Yet they also carry a scoring threat from midfield as Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros showed when each scored in their 2-0 win over Slovakia. Opponents Japan have shaken off the lacklustre form they showed in the build-up to this tournament to defeat Cameroon and Denmark en route to the last 16.

Coach Takeshi Okada's tactical gamble has paid off in style, with Keisuke Honda thriving in a new attacking role. Behind him, Yasuhito Endo and Kakoto Hasebe have bossed the midfield and Japan showed against Denmark that their armoury includes a distinct set-piece threat – two of their three goals coming direct from free-kicks. Of course their tireless approach also gives them a seeming edge in fitness over some of their rivals. While there is likely to be no change in the Japan lineup, Paraguay have to make do without defensive midfielder Victor Caceres through suspension although centre-back Antolin Alcaraz could return after sitting out the last game through an ankle injury. It is the two sides' first match-up at the FIFA World Cup but they are by no means strangers having met six times previously. The South Americans have recorded two wins to Japan’s one, though the Asians prevailed in the most recent friendly in 2003.

Players to watch
Justo Villar v Keisuke Honda

Injured in the opening minutes of Paraguay's Germany 2006 campaign, Villar has been seeking to make amends this time and conceded just one goal during the group campaign. The 32-year-old Paraguay captain, however, will have to be wary of Japan's danger man Honda, the midfielder-turned striker who has scored twice so far. The 25-year-old CSKA Moscow man has quickly become Japan's new talisman over the past months, scoring six goals which led to six wins.

The stat

4 –South Africa 2010 marks the fourth FIFA World Cup for the 35-year-old Denis Caniza, who made his tenth finals appearance for Paraguay in the 0-0 draw with New Zealand. Hot on his heels are Roque Santa Cruz and Julio Cesar Caceres, who each made seven appearances during the past two FIFA World Cups.

What they said

"With their pace and agility, Japan are a team hard to play against. They have players who can change the direction of a game so we have to come out very focused and keep running throughout the game," Roque Santa Cruz, Paraguay forward.

'Paraguay's defence is compactly organised. They have physical strength but are also good on the ball. I think they will be difficult opponents," Yuki Abe, Japan midfielder.

Prediction: Japan to win 2-1

Samba danced as Chile brushed aside

Brazil 3-0 Chile
Goals~ Bra: Juan'35, Luis Fabiano'38, Robinho'59

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Juan - While Brazil's attacking trio will take all the plaudits again, the big centre back deserves his share of the praise after another impeccable game in defence. Juan opened the scoring for the Selecao with a prodigious leap and firm header, but he should also be commended for his positioning and reading of the game, which allowed him to snuff out a string of attacking moves launched by Chile's quick strikers. Will need to maintain this sort of form as the competition nears its final phase.
Note: Official MOM - Robinho (Brazil)

# Brazil verdict: The five-time World Cup winners are looking formidable. Though this was a game they fully expected to win, they did so in a manner befitting their pedigree. The protective screen of Gilberto Silva and Ramires limited Chile to few chances, yet both underlined their attacking instincts too. With Kaka regaining a semblance of form, Robinho looking reborn and Luis Fabiano in clinical mood, Dunga's side underlined again that they are the team to beat in South Africa.

# Chile verdict: Sadly, being neat and tidy in possession means little unless you can unlock the defence in front of you. As with their game against Spain, Chile moved the ball intelligently, and with pace, but couldn't open up a mean Brazil defence. Their gung-ho style caught up with them for two of the three goals; their lack of height the other. They can go home proud of their efforts, and knowing they were beaten by one of the tournament's firm favourites.

# Could do better: Mark Gonzalez - The former Liverpool winger underlined why the club were happy for him to leave. Despite seeing plenty of the ball in positions which could have hurt Brazil, his delivery was consistently poor. Moves broke down at his feet and the confidence he must have taken from his match-winning goal against Switzerland seemed to have evaporated.

# Stat attack: Brazil are undefeated in 33 games under Dunga when Kaka and Robinho have played together, winning 29 and drawing four.

Robben shown class to sink Slovakia

Netherlands 2-1 Slovakia
Goals~ Ned: Robben'18, Sneijder'84; Svk: Vittek'90+4(P)

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Wesley Sneijder - Arjen Robben made the headlines when enjoying his first start of the tournament and scoring a lovely opening goal, but it was another gorgeous pass from Sneijder that set him free. The Inter Milan playmaker controlled the game throughout and his goal with six minutes remaining was just reward. Few in world football are as decisive as Sneijder with the ball at his feet and he appears to be flourishing at just the right time for Netherlands.
Note: Official MOM - Arjen Robben (Netherlands)

# Netherlands verdict: After their opening win over Denmark, Rafael van der Vaart said: "We played like the Germans [usually do] and they played like us." That assessment continues to be a perceptive one. While Joachim Low's side sauntered into the second round, it is the Oranje who are grinding out victories and doing just enough to progress - two qualities usually associated with their Germanic rivals. Netherlands are yet to draw any Total Football comparisons, but having maintained their 100% record, they will be keen to pick up the German habit of making the final, even if there is more to come from this side.

# Slovakia verdict: A step too far. Few fancied Slovakia to make it out of the group stage before Vladimir Weiss oversaw a stunning 3-2 win over reigning champions Italy, but Netherlands are a different prospect entirely to the ageing Azzurri. Slovakia should have equalised when Maarten Stekelenburg denied Robert Vittek and will rue the glaring miss from their star striker, but they did not deserve to progress against a talented Dutch side.

# Could do better: Marek Hamsik - The Napoli midfielder was supposed to showcase his talent to the watching world in South Africa but instead a relatively low-key campaign has come to a disappointing end. He suffered in comparison with Sneijder who showed his opponent how to run a game.

# Stat attack: Robert Vittek is now Slovakia's all-time leading goalscorer having surpassed Szilard Nemeth with his 23rd goal for his country.

Preview: Brazil v Chile

Brazil will be vying to beat Chile for the third time in three FIFA World Cup™ meetings, with the prize on offer a place in the quarter-finals. Whoever they are facing, the five-time champions come under pressure to win every match with unrivalled swagger.

That is the price they pay for starting each tournament as favourites, the burden of their success down the years, yet they can expect stiff opposition from South American rivals who have been in fine form since Marcelo Bielsa took over at the helm. Add in the carrot of a coveted berth in the last eight and all the ingredients are present for an open yet fiery encounter, not least since Chile lost 4-2 and 3-0 to Dunga’s charges in qualifying and will be desperate to turn the tables.

The match
Brazil-Chile, Round of 16, Ellis Park, Johannesburg, 28 June

A Seleção found life difficult against group-stage opponents Korea DPR and Portugal, struggling to find a way through a sturdy defensive barrier on both occasions. Despite dominating possession, Brazil had trouble picking out their forwards in dangerous positions and endured plenty of frustration. That is not a problem they are likely to find repeated against Chile, however, as Bielsa’s flamboyant side are unlikely to settle for cautious counter-attacking football.

Still, La Roja will need to keep things tight at the back. With the likes of Robinho, Kaka and Luis Fabiano sniffing out openings, Chile will require levels of commitment and organisation similar to those they displayed against Spain, when even down to ten men they managed to keep the European champions at bay – save for the two mistakes that cost them goals. They will nonetheless have to cope without Marco Estrada, sent off against Spain, and suspended duo Waldo Ponce and Gary Medel, while Brazil could be deprived the services of injured pair Felipe Melo and Julio Baptista.

Players to watch
Kaka (BRA) v Jorge Valdivia (CHI)

The Brazil playmaker remains an idol at Sao Paulo, where he first rose to prominence before setting sail for AC Milan, while his Chilean counterpart was an iconic figure for O Tricolor Paulista's regional rivals Palmeiras, firing 24 goals in 93 appearances between 2006 and 2008. Despite those contrasting club allegiances, the two players perform a similar function on the pitch and how they fare could well prove key to this game. Their vision, the quality of their passing and their set-piece pedigree could all potentially make the difference at either end, with neither defence noted for being porous or naive.

The stat
2 – Brazil and Chile have crossed paths on two previous occasions at this level, in the semi-finals at Chile 1962 and in the Round of 16 at France 1998. A Canarinho prevailed in both games, scoring four goals each time to triumph 4-2 and 4-1 – an omen, perhaps, for a feast of attacking football at Ellis Park Stadium.

What they said
"We’re going to need to learn to play against defensive sides as I think very few teams will want to play Brazil at our own game. A Seleção must start finding solutions to get around this problem, because from now on every match will be decisive,” Luis Fabiano, Brazil forward.

"Brazil have proved down the years that they’re a team to be feared, but in this World Cup they’ve also shown that in addition to their usual creative style they now boast combativeness and strength,” Marcelo Bielsa, Chile coach.

Prediction: Brazil to win 3-2

Preview: Netherlands v Slovakia

The Round of 16 game between the Netherlands and Slovakia pits one of the tournament favourites against a nation making its first FIFA World Cup™ appearance in its own right. Despite the obvious contrast between the star-studded Oranje and their lesser-known but close-knit rivals, it promises to be a fascinating duel.

The match
Netherlands-Slovakia, Round of 16, Durban Stadium, Durban

In contrast to a number of Europe’s other big guns, the Oranje managed to assert their authority in their section, Group E, in which they were never seriously troubled. After beating Denmark 2-0 in their opener, they defeated Japan 1-0 to secure their berth in the Round of 16 before taking on an already-eliminated Cameroon in their first-phase fixture. Coach Bert van Marwijk used the occasion to run the rule over some of some of his squad players, and still came out 2-1 winners. The Netherlands’ strength in depth, along with the return to fitness of stand-out winger Arjen Robben, suggests the team are strong title contenders, though they will not be underestimating opponents that have already created one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far by undoing Italy.

For their part, Slovakia took some time to find top gear, but when they did it proved too much for the reigning world champions. The central Europeans showed their inexperience at this level in allowing New Zealand to secure a late equaliser in their opening fixture, and then were outplayed in a 2-0 reverse by Paraguay. However, they upset the form book with a gritty and skilled display to secure a memorable 3-2 win that put Italy out of the FIFA World Cup.

Players to watch

Miroslav Stoch v Gregory van der Wiel

Expect sparks to fly when the pair renew aquaintances here in the Round of 16. Miroslav Stoch, an attacking midfielder who spent last year on loan from Chelsea with Dutch champions Twente, will find himself facing Gregory van der Wiel, right-back of Ajax. A fascinating duel awaits between these two fine prospects.

The stat

1 – The meeting between the Netherlands and Slovakia is the first since the central European nation became an independent country. However, the Oranje faced the former Czechoslovakia once before at a FIFA World Cup, losing 3-0 after extra time at France 1938.

What they said
“We expect a difficult game against Slovakia. They showed a lot of character against the Italians and were rewarded with a famous victory. Everything’s fine from our point of view, but there are a just a few things here and there that we need to put right,” Robin van Persie, Netherlands forward.

“I hope we're capable of producing another performance like the one against Italy. I believe we can give any team something to think about. But obviously the Dutch are favourites, not just for this game but for the whole tournament,” Robert Vittek, Slovakia forward.

Prediction: Netherlands to win 2-0

Awful Mexican defence punished heavily

Argentina 3-1 Mexico
Goals~ Arg: Tevez'26 '52, Higuain'33; Mex: Hernandez'71

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Carlos Tevez - While his first goal should not have stood, his overall performance and second goal were worthy of winning any match. Industrious as ever, he ran back 40 yards to defend a short corner, and it's that kind of work-rate that can make the difference in a team packed with flair players. His second goal was his crowning moment, though, smashing home from around 25 yards to score one of the goals of the tournament to date.
Note: Official MOM - Carlos Tevez (Argentina)

# Argentina verdict: Diego Maradona can take this as more ammunition to use against the pre-tournament doubters, but the scoreline undoubtedly flattered them. The first goal was clearly offside, the second a gift, and their defence remains a glaring Achilles' heel. Nonetheless, with Tevez, Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain in attack, it will take an impressive defence indeed to stop their charge.

# Mexico verdict: The better team in the opening stages, things fell apart when the referee controversially allowed the opening goal to stand. Apparently rattled, a dreadful mistake from Ricardo Osorio gave Argentina a second and they never really recovered. A lack of cutting-edge in attack has been a problem for some time, but Javier Hernandez took his goal exceptionally well and they have every right to believe luck was not on their side.

# Could do better: Ricardo Osorio. While Mexico may have been able to battle back from a goal down, Osorio's wretched backpass gifted Argentina a second through Gonzalo Higuain. He failed to put the mistake behind him and continued to give away possession in his own half and the final scoreline could have been far worse for the Mexicans.

# Stat attack: The last time Mexico conceded three goals or more in the World Cup was in 1978 against Poland.

Referee's blunder as Germany cruise through

Germany 4-1 England
Goals~ Ger: Klose'20, Podolski'32, Mueller'67 '70; Eng: Upson'37

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Thomas Muller - Identified by Wayne Rooney as a big threat before the game, Muller scored two and set-up the Lukas Podolski goal that put Germany 2-0 up. The Bayern Munich forward was industrious and full of running down the right and always offered an outlet; he took his two goals with fantastic composure. Honourable mention must go to England goalkeeper David James who tried in vain to thwart Germany with a number of smart stops.
Note: Official MOM - Thomas Mueller (Germany)

# Germany verdict:Very impressive in attack but question marks still remain about their defensive capabilities; they will need to improve if they are to triumph over a more clinical side than England in the quarter-finals, especially if Argentina are the opponents. However, there are numerous positives to take, with Miroslav Klose proving his international finishing prowess once again and the likes of Muller, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mesut Ozil providing boundless energy. Impressive on the counter-attack and the victory was thoroughly deserved.

# England verdict: Could have been so different had Frank Lampard's first-half strike counted when Capello's side were very much in the ascendancy. But they were beaten by a youthful and more energetic Germany team, who took advantage of defensive lapses in concentration. Wayne Rooney was once again disappointing and though England did look bright after the second goal, they were unable to demonstrate the sort of ruthless streak that their opponents displayed in abundance.

# Could do better: England's defence. The lack of pace of England's centre-back pairing was embarrassingly exposed by Joachim Low's side; John Terry and Matthew Upson's joint mistake for the first goal would have looked at home on a Sunday League pitch. Gareth Barry also looked woeful as a defensive midfielder and provided a distinct lack of protection for the back four. It would be easy to blame the assistant referee, but England defended apallingly.

# Stat attack: This was the third time in World Cup history that England conceded four goals, previous four-goal hauls were achieved by Belgium and Hungary in 1954.

Preview: Argentina v Mexico

On 24 June 2006, in Leipzig, Argentina and Mexico met in a pulsating Round of 16 encounter at that year's FIFA World Cup™. The South Americans went through with a 2-1 win, with the Mexicans' hopes of a quarter-final place dashed once again. Four years on, Javier Aguirre’s men are desperate for revenge and have the chance to test themselves against arguably the tournament’s form team. But will they be able to handle charismatic coach Diego Maradona and mercurial maestro Lionel Messi?

The match
Argentina-Mexico, Round of 16, Johannesburg
Argentina come into the last 16 on the crest of a wave, having swept all before them in Group B and ended up with three wins and nine points. Coach Maradona seems to have forged a sense of purpose and endeavour from a squad that had its difficulties in qualifying for South Africa 2010 and, with an in-form Lionel Messi in their ranks, they are hoping to book their place amongst the world’s top eight sides for the second FIFA World Cup in succession. El Diego will also enjoy the luxury of having a full-strength squad to choose from, free from injuries and suspensions.

For his part, Mexico boss Aguirre has already expressed his disquiet at having finished in second place in Group A, largely because his team has been inconsistent so far. A fine victory against 2006 runners-up France was the highpoint of El Tri’s group games, but it was sandwiched between a draw with hosts South Africa and a narrow defeat against Uruguay.

However revenge will be uppermost in Los Aztecas’ thoughts, not least because the current squad contains several survivors of that last, fateful meeting with Argentina including Rafael Marquez, who scored Mexico’s goal in Leipzig four years ago. The objective for Aguirre’s men is plain and simple: to get to that elusive “fifth game” at a FIFA World Cup finals tournament, and to book their place in the quarter-finals for the first time in 24 years.

History is on the side of Argentina; in fourteen matches against Mexico in the last 20 years, La Albiceleste have emerged victorious on seven occasions, with five draws and only two wins for El Tri.

Players to watch
Lionel Messi v Rafael Marquez
The Barcelona team-mates will meet once again as international rivals, as in 2006, when Mexican skipper Marquez opened the scoring and Messi came on as a late substitute with only a matter of minutes left in the game. The FIFA World Player of the Year 2009 is yet to notch his first goal in South Africa 2010, and La Pulga will be hoping to open his account in the knockout stages. Marquez, however, has continued his knack of scoring goals from his defensive midfield position, and scored his country’s first goal of the tournament in the Opening Match against South Africa.

The stat
14 - No fewer than 14 current players are survivors of the two nations’ last FIFA World Cup meeting in Leipzig in 2006. Amongst the eight Mexicans and six Argentinians is midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, whose superb volleyed winner for the 1986 champions was named by FIFA.com readers as the goal of the 2006 finals.

What they said

“We’re going to give Mexico the respect they deserve because, in spite of losing against Uruguay, they know exactly what they're doing. We will try to get at them and look for their weaknesses. They will have to respect my players as well because we’re putting together a very good tournament and we'll give everything for the shirt,” Diego Maradona, Argentina coach.

“It’s Argentina, but so what? There is always a lot of pessimism in Mexico. Unfortunately sometimes we don’t believe in ourselves and we don’t have that extra self-belief that other teams have. We need to change that mindset. Argentina can be beaten and that’s the way we need to approach the game,” Rafael Marquez, Mexico captain.

Prediction: Argentina to win 3-1

Preview: Germany v England

Of all the great FIFA World Cup™ fixtures, Germany v England is one of the games guaranteed to captivate the entire footballing world.

Laden with a rich and tumultuous history, the match has featured some of the true legends of the game. Franz Beckenbauer and Bobby Moore were the towering personalities in England's sole FIFA World Cup™ triumph to date, at Wembley in the 1966 Final. Gerd Muller fired the extra-time winner when West Germany came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the quarter-finals four years later in Mexico. The Germans prevailed on penalties in the Italy 1990 semi-finals, before going on to claim their third world crown. This time round, Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein provides the setting for the latest instalment in an enduring rivalry, which many on both sides would doubtless have preferred to see played later in the competition.

Germany's young team won Group D after a rollercoaster ride through the section. The critics were purring after a scintillating 4-0 victory over Australia, but a 1-0 defeat by Serbia brought the team back to earth with a bump. As it turned out, a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana ultimately saw Die Nationalmannschaft through. As for England, the squad arrived in South Africa bristling with stars at the zenith of their careers, all of them determined to make up for past disappointments on the international stage. However, seemingly cramped by the weight of expectation, Fabio Capello's men scrambled to second spot in Group C with a crucial 1-0 win against Slovenia in their final match, following a 1-1 draw with USA and a frustrating stalemate against Algeria.

The game
Germany–England, Round of 16, Mangaung/Bloemfontein

Both teams will take heart from weathering a crisis at the finals. Germany and England are fired up and confident of removing the first major obstacle on their path to glory. In public at least, both camps are professing delight at crossing swords so early in the knockout stages: a keen sense of anticipation and history in the making is, we are told, the dominant emotion. However, both Germany boss Joachim Low and his England counterpart Capello face potential selection difficulties. Bastian Schweinsteiger, a revelation so far in front of the Germany back four, is rated highly doubtful with injury, as is full-back Jerome Boateng. Striker Cacau is definitely out after rupturing a stomach muscle in training, but Miroslav Klose returns from suspension. For England, Wayne Rooney has lost form at the wrong time and is also carrying a knock on the ankle, as are Aaron Lennon and Michael Carrick.

Players to watch

Philipp Lahm v Steven Gerrard

The Bayern Munich and Liverpool men are unlikely to go head-to-head very often during the match, as Lahm operates wide on the Germany right and Gerrard, though he may be asked to play on the left, prefers to go through the middle. But both captains will be required to keep cool and show genuine leadership qualities when the emotional temperature inevitably starts to rise. Each must fire his troops up to the right level of intensity and determination without pushing matters to boiling point. This is a real test for the rookies, as both Lahm and Gerrard are wearing the armband for the first time at a major tournament as they deputise for injured duo Michael Ballack and Rio Ferdinand respectively.

The stat

27 – The number of times Germany and England have met in full internationals over the years according to FIFA's statistics. The Three Lions have won 12 and the Germans ten – though Germany have also triumphed on penalties in two matches which ended as draws after extra time.

What they said
"It would be a terrible mistake to underestimate them just because they had a few problems in their group. They may well raise their game for the knockout matches. We have no need to be in awe, and we certainly have no reason to fear them. We respect them of course, but we're not afraid," Lukas Podolski, Germany striker.

"I think we can go all the way this time. I've never felt it like this before in other tournaments. I thought it was an excellent performance against Slovenia and we can't wait to get to grips with Germany," Joe Cole, England midfielder.

Prediction: Both sides to draw 1-1, England to win penalty

Gyan strike as Ghana survived

USA 1-2 Ghana (a.e.t.)
Goals~ USA: Donovan'62(P); Gha: K P Boateng'5, Gyan'93

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Richard Kingson - Although Asamoah Gyan will get the headlines for his winning goal, it was the form of goalkeeper Kingson that allowed Ghana to get to extra-time in the first place. He made three great saves in regulation time, the pick of which was to deny Benny Feilhaber in a one-on-one.
Note: Official MOM - Andre Ayew (Ghana)

# USA verdict: Yet another slow start for the USA meant they were up against it from the start. Ghana swarmed all over their midfield and defence and coach Bob Bradley was forced to make tactical change after just 30 minutes - replacing holding-midfielder Ricardo Clark with Maurice Edu. The change allowed the USA to get back into the game and, in the second-half, got the goal that their improvement deserved. But as the match restarted for extra-time the trademark early lapse of concentration returned as Ghana scored and this time they could not recover.

# Ghana verdict: The Black Stars began in rampant fashion - scoring after just five minutes and then carving through the USA midfield with ease for the next 30 minutes. However, Ghana allowed the USA a foothold in the game before the break and in the second-half could not regain their dominance as they dropped deeper and deeper and invited pressure. Milovan Rajevac's side started extra-time in quick-fire fashion once again and took the lead just two minutes after the restart. Steven Appiah's calm assurance and rediscovered self belief saw Ghana through to the end.

# Could do better: Ricardo Clark - He was selected ahead of Jose Torres and Maurice Edu in central midfield but his first contribution was the error that lead to Ghana's opening goal. He lasted only 30 minutes as the game passed him by before being hauled off. The poor lad may never recover.

# Stat attack: The USA led for only 206 seconds at the 2010 World Cup.

Super Suarez stunned Korean

Uruguay 2-1 Korea Republic
Goals~ Uru: Suarez'8 '80; Kor: Lee Chung-Yung'68

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Luis Suarez - Having scored 49 goals in 48 games for Ajax this season, Suarez delivered on the world stage with two goals to see Uruguay through. He was not involved for much of the match, but he was clinical when the chances came and, in total, he was on target with five of his six shots.
Note: Official MOM - Luis Suarez (Uruguay)

# Uruguay verdict: Despite South Korea having much of the possession, Uruguay were not tested too regularly and, while they were generally solid in defence, individual errors allowed South Korea a way back on a number of occasions. Having looked unambitious after taking a 1-0 lead into the second half, they stepped up their game impressively when Lee Chung-Yong equalised in the 68th minute.

# South Korea verdict: Energetic and hard-working, South Korea arguably had the better of the game but there was a distinct lack of cutting-edge. They were unfortunate to hit the post with an early free-kick before committing suicide for Luis Suarez' first goal.

# Could do better: Fernando Muslera - The Uruguay goalkeeper gifted South Korea a way back into the match as he failed to deal with a free-kick before Lee Chung-Yong headed home. Such mistakes can prove fatal at this level.

# Stat attack: Thanks to Suarez's 55th goal in 61 games this season, Uruguay advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1970.

Preview Round of 16: USA v Ghana

No quarter will be asked or given when USA take on Ghana's Black Stars at Rustenburg's Royal Bafokeng Stadium for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. With both teams having already offered evidence of an attacking approach, an open, attractive game looks on the cards on Saturday.

The match

USA-Ghana, Round of 16, Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg

The Round of 16 meeting between USA and Ghana promises a feast of attacking football given both teams have looked stronger going forward than at the back. While USA teetered on the brink of elimination before scoring a stoppage-time winner in their final Group C game against Algeria, Ghana performed impressively in navigating their way through a tricky section where they faced Serbia, Australia and Germany. Though that may not necessarily ensure the west Africans the psychological upper hand in the face of single-minded opponents, several players who will be involved on Saturday have first-hand memories of the sides' meeting at the group stage in Germany four years ago - when Ghana's 2-1 victory sent the Americans home.

This time USA coach Bob Bradley will be relying on Landon Donovan, the gifted LA Galaxy forward whose two goals so far in South Africa included the decisive late winner against Algeria. Bradley's opposite number Milovan Rajevac, meanwhile, can call on Rennes front man Asamoah Gyan, who has scored six of Ghana's nine goals so far in 2010. To keep Gyan and Co at bay, the United States will need to tighten up a defence that at times has been found wanting, particularly in the first half of their 2-2 draw with Slovenia.

Players to watch
Clint Dempsey v John Pantsil

As team-mates at Fulham in the English Premiership since 2008, there can be little that these two do not know about each other. So, when Dempsey makes his characteristic runs from deep positions, he is sure to encounter the immovable force of Pantsil in the Ghana defence. And while the American perhaps has something to prove after missing a hatful of chances against Algeria, he will not expect any favours from an opponent who shrugged off a nasty clash of heads during the 1-1 draw with Australia to take his place against Germany four days later.

The stat
12 – the number of survivors from the group match between the two teams at Germany 2006: Ghana's Richard Kingson, John Mensah, Derek Boateng, Stephen Appiah, Pantsil and Matthew Amoah, and USA's Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo, Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley, Donovan and Oguchi Onyewu.

What they said
"The USA are a very good side, solid, full of running and they play well as a team. Still, we know we have the quality to beat them," Asamoah Gyan, Ghana forward.

"We'd be delighted with two more wins but why stop there? Nothing is impossible. Winning the World Cup is what we're here for," Jozy Altidore, USA forward.

Prediction: USA to win 1-0 after extra time

Preview Round of 16: Uruguay v Korea Rep

Group A winners Uruguay take on Group B runners-up Korea Republic on the back of their impressive performances against South Africa and Mexico. Under the guidance of Oscar Tabarez, the Uruguayans have become one of the most well-balanced sides at this year’s finals, organised in defence and clinical in attack.

Meanwhile, Huh Jung-Moo’s men have nothing to lose in this match, having already fulfilled their initial goal of reaching the second round for the first time on foreign soil. The winners of this match will advance to the quarter-finals to face USA or Ghana in Johannesburg on 2 July, with the losers set to make a premature return home.

The match
Uruguay-Korea Republic, Round of 16, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth

On paper at least, Korea Republic should be no match for Uruguay. La Celeste have an almost perfect record against the Taeguk Warriors, winning all four games, scoring seven times in the process and conceding only once. And the Uruguayans enter their fifth encounter with the South Koreans as the favourites, considering they have yet to concede a goal at South Africa 2010 and boast a couple of in-form, world-class strikers.

For their part, Korea Republic have looked vulnerable in defence, especially in their games against Argentina and Nigeria. Although the east Asians have scored five times – their most prolific form in the group stage of any FIFA World Cup – they also suffered their worst defeat in 12 years, going down 4-1 to the Argentinians. However, the Taeguk Warriors can take heart from their new-found source of goals - well-crafted free-kicks.

Players to watch

Diego Forlan v Park Ji-Sung

Having scored a brace against the hosts, Diego Forlan is at the core of Uruguay's three-prolonged attack. The Atletico Madrid forward is also the most capped player in the current squad and has completed all 270 minutes of Uruguay's matches thus far.

Korea Republic captain Park Ji-Sung became the second player from Asia to score in three FIFA World Cups when the Manchester United midfielder found the net against Greece. Coincidentally, both Forlan and Park have been named the Budweiser Man of the Match twice in the group stage.

The stat

4 – Uruguay and Korea Republic have met four times in the past, with La Celeste emerging victorious on each occasion. In their group stage meeting at Italy 1990, Daniel Fonseca scored a last-gasp goal to inspire the Uruguayans to a 1-0 victory.

What they said

“We’ve showed that we are a tough team to tackle. We’re trying to do what we had exactly in mind before the tournament. I don’t think we’ve achieved that yet, but Uruguay is now a difficult opponent for anybody,” Oscar Tabarez, Uruguay coach

“Although we haven’t had good results against the teams from South America, the group stage match against Argentina has given us some good lessons on how to deal with Latin American sides. We all know how to defend and attack against them, and we’ll show a different side of ourselves than in the group stage,” Park Ji-Sung, Korea Republic captain

Prediction
: Uruguay to win 2-1

Spain edged Chile but both progressed

Chile 1-2 Spain
Goals~ Chi: Millar'47; Spa: Villa'24, Iniesta'37
Red card~ Chi: Estrada'38

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: David Villa - Another superb performance from the Barcelona-bound striker. He showed supreme calmness to sidefoot home the first goal following Claudio Bravo's gaffe in goal before setting up Andres Iniesta for the second. Without him they would look toothless up front.
Note: Official MOM - Andres Iniesta (Spain)

# Chile verdict: After starting the game so well, Chile's indiscipline came back to haunt them even if the second yellow card incident itself seemed a little harsh on Marco Estrada. They showed enough attacking flair and ability to trouble one of the tournament favourites, and they will have to do it all again against Brazil.

# Spain verdict: Without doubt the least impressive of their three group games, yet that touch of quality in the attacking third proved to be the difference. Xabi Alonso picking up an ankle knock towards the end of the first half may be a worry, but they have strength in depth.

# Could do better: Fernando Torres - For the second game running the Liverpool striker was lethargic, had a terrible first touch and couldn't even come close to hitting the target. He could well lose his place for the second round date with Iberian neighbours Portugal.

# Stat attack: Spain qualified without a single booking, becoming the first team since Hungary in 1986 to not collect a card in the group stage.

Swiss eliminated after disappointing draw

Switzerland 0-0 Honduras

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Edgar Alvarez - In a game short of quality, there were no genuine standout players, but Alvarez was lively and direct for Honduras on the right wing and could easily have provided a winner for the underdogs.
Note: Official MOM - Noel Valladares

# Switzerland verdict: Having shown they could soak up the pressure and sneak a goal against Spain, the pressure was on to show they could take the game to the opposition in this must-win game, but they were far too negative and lacked any sort of cutting edge. They improved slightly when Hakan Yakin was introduced to provide a decent ball into the box, but they lacked quality options to convert them.

# Honduras verdict: They were always going to be playing for pride but, playing on the counter-attack, they looked the better team for much of the night. Edgar Alvarez and Ramon Nunez threatened to cause problems and they attacked at pace, but a lack of belief and poor final balls meant they were unable to clinch a shock win.

# Could do better: Blaise Nkufo - The veteran Switzerland striker has been a consistent performer for his country but he failed to deliver when it really mattered. He looked cumbersome throughout the game, wasting a decent opening in the first half and generally failing to provide a threat, although the same charge could be levelled at many of his team-mates.

# Stat attack: This was the first 0-0 draw for Honduras in their World Cup history. It was the third for the Swiss, with two coming in 2006.

3-0 win not enough for Elephants

Korea DPR 0-3 Ivory Coast
Goals~ CIV: Yaya Toure'14, Romaric'20, Kalou'82

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Romaric - Very tidy in possession and positive when pushing forward, Romaric was industrious throughout the match and deservedly got on the scoresheet. An honourable mention for fellow goalscorer Yaya Toure, too.
Note: Official MOM - Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast)

# North Korea verdict: The early promise of the opening match against Brazil now seems a distant memory. They were in serious danger of being swamped in the opening exchanges of this game, and could have suffered another drubbing, although they showed real character to improve in the second half.

# Ivory Coast verdict: After an initial flurry of action during which they looked full of purpose, and eager to claw back the goal difference deficit on Portugal, they soon ran out of steam and belief. A disappointing campaign but the real damage was done in the earlier games.

# Could do better: Jong Tae-Se - The 'People's Wayne Rooney' never really managed to deliver, and could not manage his promise of a goal a game. He should have finally got on the scoresheet in this game but wasted a fine chance in the second period.

# Stat attack: In 107 previous World Cup matches, no African side has scored more than three goals in a single match.

Bore draw sees Portugal through

Portugal 0-0 Brazil

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Fabio Coentrao - A rare source of energy in what was a lethargic game, Coentrao was particularly impressive in the first half as he drove forwards and put some dangerous balls into the box. With Maicon and Dani Alves both on the right for Brazil, it looked set to be a tough afternoon's work for Coentrao, but he was rarely troubled defensively and attacked with real intent.
Note: Official MOM - Christiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

# Portugal verdict: While they never came alive, Portugal contained Brazil well and had the better of the game's limited opportunities. Raul Meireles looked one of the more threatening players in the Portugal squad and should be looking to get forward more often but, defensively, Ricardo Costa looked a little vulnerable against Nilmar's pace.

# Brazil verdict: Knowing a draw would take them through in first place, Brazil made major changes in attack and never looked like overexerting themselves. In isolation, this would be viewed as a poor performance and give Dunga's critics more ammunition, but they have shown they can step it up when required and a perfunctory showing like this is little cause for concern.

# Could do better: Cristiano Ronaldo - While he is very capable of moments of magic, his attempts to score every time he receives the ball are generally counter-productive. He needs to stop trying to win every game on his own if Portugal are to succeed at this World Cup, particularly given his poor goal-scoring form for his country.

# Stat attack: Prior to the game, Brazil had failed to score just twice in their last 21 World Cup matches, both of which came against France.

Preview: Switzerland v Honduras

The Swiss should have no problem to beat the mediocre Honduras. Beyond any doubt, I fancy a comfortable win for Switzerland but the matter is how many goals can they score as this could be crucial for group standings which may come down to goal difference. Chile get one goal, Spain get two, and I fancy Switzerland to get two as well as they definitely feel the urgency to score.

Man to watch (Switzerland): Alex Frei
Returning from injury, the captain has to score goals to sent Swiss through.

Man to watch (Honduras): Maynor Figuero
The defender who has some experience in English Premier League would be relied upon again to stop Swiss from scoring.

Prediction: Switzerland to win 2-0

Preview: Chile v Spain

This is one of the match that we would expect a highly entertainment with plenty of attacking football. Spain need to win this match, while Chile need to secure a draw. This group could end up with 3 teams with 6 points but one of them have to be eliminated. All the teams are in high pressure to get a result from their match. With Torres not in form, Spain could be in a bit of trouble against Chile. This is not an easy match to be predicted, but I fancy Chile to break on counter attacks and grab a draw.

Man to watch (Chile): Alexic Sanchez
He has everything required to pose great danger in Spain's penalty box. Casillas has not reach his top form yet so far. He could utilize this chance to get into scoresheet today.

Man to watch(Spain): Xavi
His passing would be crucial to sliced the Chilean defence. As the engine of Spain's attack, he has to lift up to the expectation.

Prediction: A 1-1 draw for both sides.

Preview: Korea DPR v Ivory Coast

Both sides have their pride to fight for. The Elephants would be too strong for Korea DPR. I have my confidence for an easy win for Ivorian.

Man to watch (Korea DPR): Hong Young-Jo
The captain performance would determine whether his team would be going through another demolishing defeat. He has to hold his midfield firm.

Man to watch (Ivory Coast): Gervinho
The forward has been sensational in this world cup. He would score goal today, if not provide goal for his team mates.

Prediction: Ivory Coast to win 2-0

Preview: Portugal v Brazil

Both teams have been almost certain ti qualify. The only battle would be to win the group in order to avoid Spain next round. Although Spain has not confirmed themselves as group winner, the fact remain that their match against Chile would be a do-or-die match. If then win, they would be almost certain to top the group unless Switzerland can beat Honduras by 3 goals and above. If they draw or even lose the match, they would probably be eliminated as Switzerland should have no problem to beat Honduras. Therefore Portugal would have to beat Brazil in order not to face Spain. It would be very interesting to see whether Brazil could create great chances without Kaka and can their appeared to be solid defence can cope with speedy and skillful Portuguese. I will go for a Portuguese win.

Man to watch (Brazil): Luis Fabiano
The striker has found his scoring form against Ivory Coast. His performance would determine the outcome of this tie.

Man to watch (Portugal): Ricardo Carvalho
The experienced center back has been pretty good so far. He need another good performance to stop Robinho and Fabiano.

Prediction: Portugal to win 2-1

Japan's free-kicks practices reaped rewards

Denmark 1-3 Japan
Goals~ Den: Tomasson'81; Jap: Honda'17, Endo'30, Okazaki'87

Match Summary

# Man of the Match: Keisuke Honda - Scored one of a pair of sensational free-kicks for the Blue Samurai, and aside from that looked a threat whenever he had the ball at his feet - also providing a beautifully worked assist for Okazaki's goal. Showed excellent distribution and offered an effective outlet throughout; proved again at these finals that he is a player who possesses genuine class.
Note: Official MOM - Keisuke Honda (Japan)

# Denmark verdict: Completely one-dimensional, Morten Olsen's side were woeful in the first-half and though they threw caution to the wind in the second, the Danes were unable to unlock a compact and well-drilled Japanese unit. On this showing, they certainly deserve to be heading out of the tournament with their tails between their legs.

# Japan verdict: Impressive. Passed crisply, moved intelligently and finished clinically. Looked very comfortable in possession and a warning to their second round opponents Paraguay - underestimate this Japan team at your peril. A completely different side to the one that was in such dreadful form coming into the tournament, Japan are now hitting the high notes at the right time.

# Could do better: Thomas Sorensen - A player who has a reputation for being one of the Premier League's most consistent performers was anything but against Japan. Should have done better with Honda's free-kick after being completely wrong-footed, and set-up his wall completely wrong for Endo's goal. Was almost embarrassed a la David Seaman v Brazil at the 2002 World Cup but managed to gather unconvincingly.

# Stat attack: Japan's goal was the fastest they have ever scored in a World Cup match (previous mark was 26th minute against Australia in 2006).

Dutch retained perfect record

Cameroon 1-2 Netherlands
Goals~ Cam: Etoo'65(P); Ned: van Persie'36, Huntelaar'83

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Arjen Robben - While the Dutch were generally solid and occasionally produced flashes of quality, Robben's 73rd-minute introduction suggested the Dutch have every reason to dream of a first World Cup triumph this summer. He was inventive and bright, and the strike that came off the post to provide Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with the winner was sublime.
Note: Official MOM - Robin van Persie (Netherlands)

# Cameroon verdict: Uninventive, the Indomitable Lions were always looking for Geremi to provide the ammunition but his delivery was not quite up to scratch. Eto'o provided moments of genuine quality, and a young Aboubakar looked lively after being brought on, but it was an uninspired performance from a team that had already failed to live up to their potential and suffered the ignominy of an exit before the final game had begun.

# Netherlands verdict: Far from their best, the Oranje played in second gear for much of the game, not really coming alive until Robben's introduction. There were flashes of quality to suggest that they may be genuine contenders but, in a listless match in which they simply looked to stay in control, they rarely looked troubled.

# Could do better: Rigobert Song - A seasoned veteran, Song looked well out of his depth when he came on for a brief cameo. Should be honoured for his tremendous commitment to the national team, but he showed that it is time to step aside and let some young blood step into the national set-up. Showed zero pace and Robben ran him ragged.

# Stat attack: Cameroon have never conceded first and come back to win. In 1998, the Indomitable Lions came back from one down to draw against Chile.

Kiwis remained unbeaten but failed to qualify

Paraguay 0-0 New Zealand

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Lucas Barrios - It says a lot about the quality of the game that a substitute was the pick of the players, but the striker showed real intent when he was introduced. Looked lively after coming on, getting into good positions on the wings and producing a couple of dangerous crosses.
Note: Official MOM - Roque Santa Cruz (Paraguay)

# Paraguay verdict: Very disappointing following two impressive performances against Italy and Slovakia. Lacked a real cutting edge and failed to produce in the final third. Were reduced to woeful long-range efforts and must reproduce their form of the previous fixtures to have any hope of advancing.

# New Zealand verdict: Too limited, the All Whites didn't push forward until the final ten minutes and never really looked like forcing anything from the game. They didn't possess enough quality but must be praised for their fantastic run - an unbeaten World Cup campaign represents an incredible achievement for the minnows.

# Could do better: Oscar Cardozo - One shot from long range is all the striker had to show for his 66 fruitless minutes and he will almost certainly be dropped in favour of Barrios for Paraguay's second-round match. His hold-up play was abysmal and he is perhaps still feeling the effects of a pre-tournament injury.

# Stat attack: Paraguay advanced from group play in both 1998 and 2002, but had the misfortune to face one of the eventual finalists in the second round in both years, losing to France in 1998 and Germany in 2002, both by a 1 0. They will have to negotiate a way past either Japan or Denmark in the second round this time, with Brazil their likely opponents in the quarter-finals.

Slovakia jubilant as Italian sent packing

Slovakia 3-2 Italy
Goals~ Svk: Vittek'25'73, Kopunek'89; Ita: Di Natale'81, Quagliarella'90+2

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Robert Vittek - The joint-top scorer in South Africa demonstrated his poaching prowess once again but was also a constant menace with his off-the-ball running. He held the ball up brilliantly and was imperious in the air, winning plenty of headers. His two goals were just rewards for an excellent all-round display.
Note: Official MOM - Robert Vittek (Slovakia)

# Slovakia verdict: Showed a distinct improvement after their defeat to Paraguay. Undoubtedly the greatest result in the country's short history. Vittek led the line well and the midfield showed fantastic energy right up to the end. Defensive errors must be cut out if further progress is to be made but it was a resolute performance and Vladimir Weiss's side fully deserve their place in the second round.

# Italy verdict: A shocking first-half display and the concession of two-goals gave them far too much to do and it was too little too late in terms of the intense pressure in the final 15 minutes of the game. Quagliarella's introduction livened things up but there were far too many underperforming players in the team, something that the any new manager must address. It was an inglorious end of the Azzurri's tenure as champions and they were woeful throughout their three-game defence of the trophy.

# Could do better: Fabio Cannavaro - Has looked a shadow of the player that won both the World Cup and World Player of the Year award in 2006 and was again out of his depth against Slovakia. Vittek caused him problems throughout and he was perhaps lucky to avoid a first-half sending off, having already been on a yellow. Will bow out of top-level football and may perhaps be more at home playing in Dubai next season.

# Stat attack: It is the first time in World Cup history that the two losing finalists from the previous tournament have failed to progress from the group stage having competed.

Thursday, June 24, 2010

Preview: Cameroon v Netherlands

A very much meaningless match as Netherlands has already qualified while Cameroon already being eliminated. I fancy a good draw this one.

Man to watch (Netherlands): Elijo Elia
The super sub could be given a good spell today. His skill would be essential to break the vulnerable Cameroon defence.

Man to watch (Cameroon): Samuel Eto'o
He is undoubtedly a most important player for Cameroon to get goals.

Prediction: A 2-2 draw for both sides

Australia won but bowed out

Australia 2-1 Serbia
Goals~ Aus: Cahill'69, Holman'73; Ser: Pantelic'84

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Brett Holman - In a hard fought match, super-sub Brett Holman changed the course of a game that Serbia were in control of. Tim Cahill scored just two minutes after the AZ Alkmaar midfielder's introduction and Holman then scored himself with a 30-yard wonder goal to give Australia a 2-0 lead.
Note: Official MOM - Tim Cahill (Australia)

# Australia verdict: Struggled to get into the match as they opted for the direct route in the first-half. After the break the Socceroos played more of a passing game, keeping the ball on the floor, and it suited them better.

# Serbia verdict: The Serbs were dominant in possession in the first-half and looked comfortable. But the White Eagles made a slow start after the break and lost their way. Zoran Tosic's introduction as sub in the 62nd minute got them back on course, but it was too little, too late.

# Could do better: Nikola Zigic The 6' 7" striker missed a header from point-blank range when unmarked in the first-half. He didn't improve after the break and was hauled off after 69 minutes, to be replaced by Marko Pantelic.

# Stat attack: This was the Socceroos' first win in six games at the World Cup finals (two draws and three defeats).

Preview: Denmark v Japan

Japan only need a draw to qualify from this group. I expect them to defend with their heart and strength in this match. If we look at Denmark previous two matches, they find it hard to break solid defence, but they could score goals through counter attacks. This is mainly due to their forwards are generally aged but have plenty of skills in them. They could not beat those prepared defensive line through speed and power. And come to worse is that we see plenty of defensive errors by the Danish team against Cameroon in particular. I would fancy a dull draw this one.

Man to watch (Denmark): Nicklas Bebdtner
The towering forward has some good skills to troubled defence, but he has to distribute ball better, especially when he face a packed defence.

Man to watch (Japan): Yoshito Okubo
The forward could be very dangerous if he was given some space to shoot. When Danish attention were put on Honda during counter attacks, Okubo would stand a good chance to score.

Prediction: A goalless draw for both sides

Preview: Paraguay v New Zealand

Paraguay has been very impressive so far. Their skills should create plenty of problems for New Zealand. Having spring double surprises in the tournament so far, the Kiwis still have plenty to play for in this final group game. Ryan Nelson and Mark Paston has to provide another outstanding performance to limit Paraguay trio forwards.
I expect a good win for Paraguay this time. New Zealand strength and luck would come to an end today.

Man to watch (Paraguay): Lucas Barrios
The forward has been playing well so far, but he is just unlucky not to get into score sheet. He always collect ball from Santa Cruz flick on. I fancy him to get his goal today.

Man to watch (New Zeland): Ryan Nelson
The captain put in a brilliant performance against Italian. His resilience at the back is the biggest asset for his team.

Prediction: Another comfortable 2-0 win for Paraguay

Preview: Slovakia v Italy

The Slovakian proved to be no match to the big boys when they lose without giving a good fight against Paraguay. However in the Italian camp is not high currently. Gilardino and Marchisio continue to perform well below expectstion. Pirlo may return to the starting line-up today which could provide more cutting edge for the forards through his passing. Anyway his form could not be guaranteed after just returning from injury. I expect a tough game for Italian, but they will come in top with a narrow win.

Player to watch (Italy): Fabio Cannavaro
The center back performance has been highly criticized in the tournament so far. He would be target to attack for Vittek and Sestek. The captain has to play well today to avoid another slump for his sides.

Player to watch (Slovakia): Miroslav Stoch
The former Chelsea man is the exciting prospect in Slovakia team. He has just returned from injury, and could be a threat to Zambrotta down the wing.

Prediction: Italy to win 1-0

Oezil sent Germany top the group

Ghana 0-1 Germany
Goal~ Ger: Oezil'60

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Mesut Ozil - The forward was involved in most of Germany's good work and toiled tirelessly up front. He was a constant thorn in the side of the Ghana defence and scored the goal to send his side into the next round.
Note: Official MOM - Mesut Oezil (Germany)

# Ghana verdict: Started the match in a very lively manner and created some good chances, but lacked a real clinical finsher up front. The Black Stars looked like they tired after the break and then clearly settled for second place as results came in from elsewhere.

# Germany verdict: A good performance, but there are worries at the back for Die Mannschaft, who were torn apart by Ghana early on. However, Joachim Low's side plugged away and deserved their win after showing much more guile than their opponents in the final third.

# Could do better: Cacau - Only got into the side because Miroslav Klose was suspended and is highly unlikely to retain his place after failing to seize his chance. The VfB Stuttgart was also sloppy in possession.

# Stat attack: Mesut Ozil's strike was the first German goal scored from outside the 18-yard box.

Spirited USA has done it again

USA 1-0 Algeria
Goal~ USA: Donovan'90+1
Red card~ Alg: Yahia'90+3

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Michael Bradley - A solid all-round performance from the coach's son. He looked inventive on the ball and provided a creative presence in midfield, though he also worked hard. He showed plenty of industry in chasing back and breaking up possession when Algeria had the ball in what was an impressive box-to-box display.
Note: Official MOM - Landon Donovan (USA)

# USA verdict: By far and away the better team, it seemed that USA's profligacy would cost them after both Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey were guilty of missing clear-cut chances. But Landon Donovan popped up late on to save their tournament and ensure Bob Bradley's side top the group.

# Algeria verdict: Started brightly, with Rafik Djebbour hitting the bar in first ten minutes, but after that they were dominated by their opponents. Looked shaky at the back and were reduced to ambitious efforts from distance as they fell limply out of the tournament. Nadir Belhadj was once again one of Algeria's star performers along with Karim Ziani, but there were few positives to take out of this one for the Desert Foxes.

# Could do better: Assistant referee - For the second game in a row, USA were denied a goal by a poor decision from the match official. On this occasion, the assistant referee ruled Clint Dempsey's first-half strike offside, despite the fact that replays showed Majid Bougherra to be playing him on.

# Stat attack: This was USA's first World Cup clean sheet since their 1-0 win over England back in 1950.

Defoe sent struggling England into next round

Slovenia 0-1 England
Goal~ Eng: Defoe'23

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: James Milner - Made a shaky start but quickly recovered to provide an invaluable outlet on the right for England. His cross led to Jermain Defoe's goal and he combined well on the flank with Glen Johnson, both in attack and defence. A tireless performance. Honourable mentions must also go to John Terry and Steven Gerrard.
Note: Official MOM - Jermain Defoe (England)

# Slovenia verdict: Posed a threat from set pieces and kept England goalkeeper David James on his toes with some long-range strikes. Played a counter-attacking game and fought until the end to contribute to a nerve-jangling finale.

# England verdict: After an understandably nervous start England got into the groove and rediscovered the form of old. For a 20-minute spell after half-time they looked like genuine world beaters and should have added to their goal tally - Wayne Rooney hit the post and Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic made string of good saves.

# Could do better: Matthew Upson - Looked a little lumbering in defence and didn't catch the eye until a last-ditch tackle denied Slovenia an almost certain equaliser late on. Before that, he was a spectator to Terry's combative heroics.

# Stat attack: Jermain Defoe's last goal for England was also against Slovenia on September 5, 2009.

Preview: Australia v Serbia

Australia needs a miracle to qualify, but I believe they will give their best against Serbia. Serbia has not been impressive in their first two matches. Their supposed to be solid defence commits silly mistakes in every match, and their forwards has not been as clinical as they should be. As long as Neill can froze out Zigic. Jovanovic and Krasic will be very ineffective as well. The Australian definitely stand a fighting chance agaist Serbia. This could be a very tough, but boring game to watch. I fancy Serbia to win narrowly in the end.

Player to watch (Australia): Lucas Neill
The captain has been superb against Ghana recently. He would need another solid display today to resist the Serbian attacking trio.

Player to watch (Serbia): Nikola Zigic
The tall forward flick on and hold up ball ability would be heavily relied upon to break the Aussies defence.

Prediction: Serbia to win 1-0

Preview: Ghana v Germany

As the only realistic hope for African teams to reach second round, Ghana will give their everything to secure a draw against the much favourite Germany side. Of course, it is still possible for them to qualify even if they lose against Germany, but the precondition is Serbia could not beat Australia. If Serbia draws with Australia, Ghana must not lose to Germany more than 1 goal to qualify. If Serbia lost to Australia, Australia shall not win by more than 3 goals. Any which way it is a very dangerous situation for them once they lost to Germany. For Germany, the only way to secure qualification is to win. If they draw, they must hope Australia to hold Serbia to a draw as well. Plenty of calculation around, but it would be foreseeable that Germany will go out attack from the very first minute. While Ghana will try to defend, while hitting Germany from counter attacks through their speedy forwards. If Germany gets an early goal, it could be all over for Ghana. Germany left back Badstuber has been highly criticized for his previous performance. He would have another though test today against Ayew. I would still go for a Germany win, and it could be a very high scoring game.

Player to watch (Ghana): Kevin-Prince Boateng
He is probably the enemy for every Germany players and fans after he ended world cup hope of their captain Michael Ballack. But he has been instrumental for the Ghana midfield so far which lost Michael Essien through injury. It would be very interesting to see how German players play with Boateng on the field.

Player to watch (Germany): Cacau
He would most probably stand in for suspended Klose. This is the opprtunity for him to justify himself as a regular starter for the German.

Prediction: Germany to win 3-2

Preview: USA v Algeria

USA has been very impressive in their come back draw against Slovenia. They are a very spirited side and never going to be easily beaten. They have a good squad and have plenty of speed and flair in it. Algeria will find it hard to contain them. I would fancy an easy win for USA.

Player to watch (USA): Landon Donovan
The captain has been outstanding in their last match. His set pieces are very effective and he have some great piece of skills to pass and shoot. He should kill the game off for USA.

Player to watch (Algeria): Nadir Belhadj
The right wing back has a tough challenge today as he would face Donovan. He is a typical attacking full back who is good in assisting midfield and forwards but tends to lose his position in defence easily. If he didn't perform today, Algeria would suffer some disappointing defeat today.

Prediction: USA to win 3-1

Preview: Slovenia v England

This is a very last chance for England to justify their status as favourites to win the world cup. They have been performing well below par and find themselves struggling in the supposed to be easy group. Slovenia has a decent spell in this tournament so far. They can score goals, and it takes lot of efforts to break their defence. But England has still the edging abilities. If their towering forward such as Heskey or Crouch perform like Altidore of USA and Gerrard combined well with Rooney, we could be heading for a thumping victory.

Player to watch (Slovenia): Zlatan Ljubijankic
The striker could be very dangerous in counter attacks. Upson and Terry have to be wary of him.

Player to watch (England): Wayne Rooney
After another poor performance against Algeria, this is the very last chance for him to prove himselves in this biggest stage of football world. He was not sharp and not in condition at all throughout the match. If such performance continued in this match, England could be in trouble again.

Prediction: England to win 2-1

African hopes dashed after Nigeria hold to draw

Nigeria 2-2 Korea Repiblic
Goals~ Nig: Uche'12, Yakubu'69(P); Kor: Lee Jung-Soo'38, Park Chu-Young'49

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Park Chu-Young - A constant menace up front, he was South Korea's most inventive player and showed skill and vision in the final third. A great free-kick - which was the first goal from a dead-ball situation that was actually meant - gave him something to remember.
Note: Official MOM - Park Ji-Sung (Korea Republic)

# South Korea verdict: Fluent in attack, they created plenty of chances, but there are concerns about their defensive play. Cha Du-Ri was very sloppy for the first goal and the penalty was something the coach will not want to see again. They may trouble Uruguay in attack, but it could be a very open game.

# Nigeria verdict:A few good first half an hour, they let the Koreans control the game too much which is why it slipped away from them. That said, the final ten saw them have at least three good chances to seal the win.

# Could do better: Yakubu - He may have scored a penalty soon afterwards, but the miss beforehand was one of the worst in World Cup history. Four yards out, with an open goal, all Yakubu had to do was put the ball in the net, but his sidefoot slid wide. Awful.

# Stat attack: For all of their attacking efforts, Nigeria only had two shots on target after Uche's goal in the 12th minute.

Argentina sent Greece home

Greece 0-2 Argentina
Goals~ Arg: Demichelis'77, Palermo'89

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Clemente Rodriguez - The left-back bombed forward at every chance and was a constant threat. Not the first name on the lips when you think of an Argentine defender, but he was excellent and it just goes to show what happens when you play a proper defender as a full-back.
Note: Official MOM - Lionel Messi (Argentina)

# Argentina verdict: Very comfortable on the ball, but they were hardly troubled. Going about their business quietly, Maradona was not forced into making any real decisions as Greece sat back. Argentina only needed a point and they won't have worked up much of a sweat picking up the win.

# Greece verdict: Utterly awful. Even when they knew they needed to score goals and win the game, they didn't come out of their shell. Seemed very happy with a small defeat and some may say they showed a disrespect to the competition for playing as they did. They should regret not giving it a go.

# Could do better: Otto Rehhagel - The man behind the tactics that bored everyone to death at Euro 2004 was at it again. Greece are by far and away the worst team to watch in the entire competition and Rehhagel really needs to change something if they are to ever be taken seriously.

# Stat attack: At one point, Juan Sebastian Veron had more touches of the ball (98) that the top three players on Greece combined (97).

Uruguay impressed again

Mexico 0-1 Uruguay
Goal~ Uru: Suarez'43

MATCH SUMMARY

# Man of the Match: Diego Perez - The man charged with protecting the back four had an exceptional game. Mexico were out in search for a goal which would have guaranteed their qualification, and Perez was on hand throughout to snuff out the attacks.
Note: Official MOM - Luis Suarez (Uruguay)

# Mexico verdict: The team which impressed so much in beating France lacked a cutting edge in this game. They have to be thankful that they had a goal difference buffer against South Africa. With Argentina likely to lie in the second round, they face a tough test.

# Uruguay verdict: Uruguay always said they would not be defensive as they were eager to finish top and thus book a meeting with the second placed side from Group B, and they did not disappoint. They played on the counter attack and created the better chances. In truth, as soon as they did get the goal they were happy to protect the lead.

# Could do better: Guillermo Franco - Showed the touch of a player who has seen little club football with West Ham United in recent months. If he could control the ball then Mexico may not have lost this match.

# Stat attack: Luis Suarez has now scored 53 goals in 60 appearances for club and country this season. On the last 20 occasions that Suarez has found the net in all competitions, he has finished on the winning side.
